Residence Halls - Arrillaga, Kratt, Howard and Michaels
A stop on Menlo College Campus Walk, a free self-guided tour.
Around you are Menlo's residence halls, where many students live. The newest is John Arrillaga Residence Hall, the long three-story building that opened in fall 2022 with 288 beds. It was the college's first new building in nearly 45 years and has quiet study rooms, group work spaces and lounges for gaming and movies. It was dedicated in 2023 in memory of John Arrillaga, the Silicon Valley developer and philanthropist who helped pay for it.
The older halls carry the names of the people who built Menlo. Howard Hall and Michaels Hall opened in 1954 and honor founding leader Lowry Howard and board chairman C. F. Michaels. Kratt Hall, the largest dorm when it opened in 1969, is named for William E. Kratt, who led the college from 1944 to 1970, and is the main residence for first-year students.
These are homes, so admire them from the paths. The Admissions Building, where you began, is a short walk east past the pool.
Getting here: From Wunderlich Field, walk back east and north toward the long three-story building with the tennis courts beyond it.
Did you know?: C. F. Michaels, namesake of Michaels Hall, kept Menlo alive during the Great Depression: in 1931 the college nearly closed until he made it large loans.
Photo op: Frame the long front of Arrillaga Hall from the path, with the older halls on either side for a then-and-now picture.
