A stop on Las Vegas Strip Walk, a free self-guided tour.

Cross to the west side of the Boulevard and step into the Forum Shops, the mall at Caesars Palace that opened in 1992. The ceiling is painted like an Italian sky, and the lighting slowly shifts from day to dusk, so it's easy to lose track of time - which, in Las Vegas, is rather the point.

Roman columns, statues and fountains wrap around the designer stores, and from 1997 to 2016 this was the highest-grossing mall in the United States per square foot. Near the Strip entrance, look for the spiral escalators; when they were installed in 2004, only one other project in the country had them.

Deeper inside, the free Fall of Atlantis show retells the legend of the sunken city with fire, water and animatronic figures, above a 50,000-gallon aquarium full of tropical fish. It runs regularly through the day, so check the schedule posted nearby. Caesars Palace itself has been serving up Rome in the Mojave since 1966.

Getting here: Walk back to Las Vegas Boulevard and use a pedestrian bridge or crosswalk to reach Caesars Palace on the west side; the Forum Shops entrance is on the Strip at the north end of the resort.

Did you know?: When the Forum Shops first opened, moving walkways carried shoppers in from the Strip, but the only way out was through the casino.

Photo op: Inside, frame the painted sky above the columns and storefronts; the spiral escalators make a great shot from below.
