Casa de la Cultura - The Town's Memory

A stop on Todos Santos: Pueblo Magico Walk, a free self-guided tour.

This low building around a courtyard is the town's cultural center, named for Professor Nestor Agundez Martinez, a local teacher who spent his life championing the history and culture of Todos Santos. It began life as a schoolhouse, and you can still picture classrooms opening onto the shaded patio.

Inside, if it is open, you will find a regional history museum, a photo archive of the town's past and rooms of local art. Look for the large murals on the walls, painted by students, which tell the story of the region from its first peoples through the mission era to modern times.

This is the best place in town to fill in the backstory you will see on the rest of the walk: the Guaycura people who lived here first, the mission, the cane fields and the mills. Check current hours at the door, since they change with the season, and take your time with the old photographs.

Getting here: From the plaza, walk northeast about two blocks to the cultural center, a long building with a courtyard on Calle Benito Juarez.

Did you know?: The center keeps a historic photo archive and a rancher's house display, so you can see how families in the cane-growing days actually lived.

Photo op: Step into the courtyard and frame the colorful murals with the arched walkway in the foreground.
