Cypress Point Lookout

A stop on 17 Mile Drive, a free self-guided tour.

Cypress Point Lookout gives you a view south along the coast, and on a very clear day you can see the Point Sur Lighthouse, about 20 miles away.

The golf course beside you is Cypress Point Club, a private club that opened in 1928. Its course was designed by Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National. The 16th hole, a par 3 that must carry an ocean inlet, is one of the most photographed holes in golf. Membership is small and very exclusive, so this lookout is as close as most people get.

The rocks below are a harbor seal haul-out, and the lookout itself may close during the spring pupping season to protect the animals.

Look out at the Monterey cypress trees clinging to the rocks. Their twisted, flat-topped shapes come from constant wind off the ocean.
