17 Mile Drive
Welcome to the 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach, one of the most scenic drives in the world. Nestled along the Monterey Peninsula in California, this picturesque journey offers breathtaking views of the Pacific coastline, adjacent forests, and iconic landmarks.
First, some logistics. This tour is absolutely free but the route you’ll drive does have a gatehouse. There is a $12 charge per vehicle. However, the fee is reimbursed with a purchase at all Pebble Beach Resorts restaurants, except Pebble Beach Market. Tour buses are charged $6 per passenger. Also the gates are open to the public from sunrise to sunset.
The origins of the 17-Mile Drive date back to the late 19th century. It was first established in 1881 by a group of investors who sought to attract tourists to the Del Monte Hotel in Monterey. Originally a horse-drawn carriage route, it provided guests with a grand tour of the peninsula's captivating scenery. Over time, the drive has evolved into a modern road, accommodating visitors from all around the world who want to experience its splendor by car, bike, or even on foot.
One of the more interesting tales tied to the 17-Mile Drive is about the Lone Cypress, a tree standing proudly on a granite hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Over 250 years old, the Lone Cypress has become a symbol of resilience and beauty. This iconic tree has weathered numerous storms and remains a testament to nature's enduring power. According to local lore, early Spanish explorers used the Lone Cypress as a navigational marker.
Another notable stop along the drive is the Ghost Tree at Pescadero Point. This beautiful site features bleached white Monterey cypress trees shaped by the relentless coastal winds. The stark contrast of the white trees against a background of dark rocks and blue ocean creates a breathtaking, almost otherworldly scene. The name Ghost Tree is fitting, as it evokes a ghostly, spectral atmosphere that has mesmerized visitors for generations.
In addition to its natural wonders, the 17-Mile Drive boasts several world-class sites of the man-made kind. Golf enthusiasts will be thrilled to visit the Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the most famous golf courses in the world. Since opening in 1919, it has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the U.S. Open. With sweeping ocean views and challenging holes, playing a round here is a dream for any golfer.
For those looking to indulge in luxury, the Pebble Beach Resorts offer exquisite accommodations and fine dining experiences. The Lodge at Pebble Beach is a historic resort that offers unparalleled comfort and elegance. Guests can enjoy a meal at one of its renowned restaurants, such as Stillwater Bar & Grill, which features fresh seafood and stunning ocean views. The Inn at Spanish Bay, another exquisite resort, provides a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.
The 17-Mile Drive is also home to several beautiful beaches and picnic areas. Fanshell Overlook is a popular spot, especially during the harbor seal pupping season in spring. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the diversity of avian life at Bird Rock, where sea lions and pelicans coexist in a harmony unique to this region. There are numerous spots along the drive where you can park, take a walk, and savor the natural beauty around you.
