Korean War MemorialStop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.Nineteen stainless steel figures move through juniper bushes and granite strips that stand in for the rice paddies of Korea. Sculptor Frank Gaylord gave them ponchos that seem to blow in the wind; together they are a squad on patrol drawn from every branch of the armed forces. Their reflections in the polished black wall beside them make 38 figures, a reference to the 38th parallel that divided Korea. That wall, designed by Louis Nelson, is etched with more than 2,400 faces of support troops taken from archival photographs: nurses, mechanics, chaplains and others. The memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice that ended the fighting. In 2022 the Wall of Remembrance was added around the Pool of Remembrance. Its granite panels carry the names of the 36,634 Americans and 7,174 members of the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army, known as KATUSA, who died in the war.The memorial is especially affecting at night, when the soldiers are lit from below. Open around the clock.Stops on this tourWashington MonumentNational Museum of African American History and CuNational Museum of American HistorySmithsonian National Museum of Natural HistoryNational Gallery of ArtUnited States CapitolUnited States Botanic GardenNational Museum of the American IndianNational Air and Space MuseumHirshhorn Museum and Sculpture GardenThe Smithsonian Institution Building - The CastleFreer Gallery of ArtJefferson MemorialWorld War II MemorialMartin Luther King Jr. MemorialKorean War MemorialLincoln MemorialVietnam Veterans MemorialWhite House EllipseWhite HouseLafayette Square
