A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
The Italian Renaissance-style building west of the Castle is the Freer Gallery of Art, which opened in 1923 as the Smithsonian's first art museum. Detroit industrialist Charles Lang Freer, who made his money building railroad cars, gave the nation his collection of Asian art and of American art by his friend James McNeill Whistler.
The star of the museum is Whistler's Peacock Room, a London dining room he painted in blue and gold in 1876 and 1877 for shipping magnate Frederick Leyland. The two men fell out over Whistler's fee, and Whistler added a mural of two fighting peacocks to make his point. Freer bought the entire room in 1904 and shipped it to Detroit, and it came here after his death.
Freer's will set strict rules: it barred loans from his collection and the display of other collections beside it. Look also for the Cosmic Buddha, a carved limestone figure from China's Northern Qi dynasty in the sixth century.
Together with the neighboring Sackler Gallery, the Freer forms the National Museum of Asian Art. Admission is free.
