A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
Just east of the Castle is the Arts and Industries Building, the second-oldest building on the Mall. Designed by Adolf Cluss and Paul Schulze, it opened in 1881 as the National Museum, built to hold the crates of exhibits shipped to Washington after the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
Before the exhibits went in, it hosted President James Garfield's inaugural ball in March 1881. Look at the red, cream and black brick in patterns across its walls, and the central rotunda with its fountain.
The building has spent long stretches closed. It opened for a summer run in 2026 and is closed again. On August 31, 2026, the Smithsonian's regents voted to make it the future home of the National Museum of the American Latino.
From here, return to the Castle and walk west to the Freer Gallery.
