A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
The Enid A. Haupt Garden behind the Castle is open from dawn to dusk even during construction, and most visitors never guess that it is a rooftop. It opened in 1987 on top of the underground Sackler Gallery, the National Museum of African Art and the Ripley Center.
The garden covers about four acres. In the middle is a Victorian-style parterre, a flat lawn edged with flower beds in a formal pattern. On the west side, the Moongate Garden near the Sackler takes its round stone gates and pool from Chinese garden design. On the east side, the Fountain Garden near African Art draws on Islamic gardens, with water channels running between walls.
It is named for Enid A. Haupt, a publisher and garden lover who paid for it.
Next, walk east along the Mall to the Arts and Industries Building.
