Pickett's Charge - Mark Bradford's 400-Foot Battle
A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
On the third floor, the inner ring of the Hirshhorn is wrapped in Pickett's Charge, a set of eight huge abstract panels by the Los Angeles artist Mark Bradford that together run almost 400 feet around the circle.
Bradford built them on the model of a famous 1883 cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg by the French painter Paul Philippoteaux, a 360-degree painting of the Confederate attack on the battle's last day. He layered printed copies of the old painting with paper and paint, then sanded, ripped and cut through them, so bits of soldiers and smoke show through the scars.
The work opened in 2017 and is still listed as on view. Walk the full circle slowly to see the images come and go.
Next, cross Jefferson Drive to the Sculpture Garden.
