Belief+Doubt - Barbara Kruger's Wall of Words

A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.

The whole lower level of the Hirshhorn is a single artwork. Since August 2012, Barbara Kruger's Belief+Doubt has wrapped about 6,700 square feet of walls, floor and even the sides of the escalators in printed vinyl covered with words.

The text is set in big, bold letters, mostly black, white and red, the style Kruger made famous in the 1980s. Some lines are questions and some are blunt statements about money, power, belief and who gets heard. You walk across the words as you read them, and the museum shop and lower-level lobby sit right inside the work.

It was meant to stay for a few years and has become one of the museum's longest-running installations; the Hirshhorn still lists it as on view.

Next, go up to the third floor for Mark Bradford's Pickett's Charge.
