Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture GardenStop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour. The round concrete building is the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian's museum of modern and contemporary art. It opened in 1974 with the collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, who was born in Latvia, came to the United States as a child and made a fortune in stocks and uranium mining. He gave the nation about 6,000 works.Architect Gordon Bunshaft raised the building on four massive piers around an open courtyard and fountain, a design critics have compared to everything from a doughnut to a bunker. The galleries run in rings, so you can circle each floor and end up where you started.Across Jefferson Drive, the sunken Sculpture Garden, redesigned in 1981 by landscape architect Lester Collins, holds Auguste Rodin's The Burghers of Calais among many other works. In summer, look for Yoko Ono's Wish Tree, where visitors tie handwritten wishes to the branches. The museum's 2017 Yayoi Kusama exhibition, with its mirrored infinity rooms, drew record crowds. Admission is free.Stops on this tourWashington MonumentNational Museum of African American History and CuNational Museum of American HistorySmithsonian National Museum of Natural HistoryNational Gallery of ArtUnited States CapitolUnited States Botanic GardenNational Museum of the American IndianNational Air and Space MuseumHirshhorn Museum and Sculpture GardenThe Smithsonian Institution Building - The CastleFreer Gallery of ArtJefferson MemorialWorld War II MemorialMartin Luther King Jr. MemorialKorean War MemorialLincoln MemorialVietnam Veterans MemorialWhite House EllipseWhite HouseLafayette Square
