A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
For nearly 50 years the Spirit of St. Louis hung in the museum's front hall. Since July 2025 it has been in the Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight gallery, where it gets less sunlight. Its fabric-covered body fades in ultraviolet light, so the curators moved it somewhere dimmer.
Charles Lindbergh flew this single-engine plane alone from New York to Paris on May 20 and 21, 1927, in about 33 and a half hours. Look at the front: there is no forward windshield. Extra fuel tanks filled the space ahead of the cockpit, so Lindbergh used a periscope or turned the plane to look out the side windows.
The gallery covers other record-setters of the 1920s and 1930s, when flying was new and dangerous.
Next, head upstairs to Destination Moon.
