Americans - Indian Names and Images Everywhere
A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
Americans opened in 2018 with a simple, startling idea: American Indians are everywhere in American life, on everything from butter boxes and sports jerseys to a military missile and a motorcycle, yet most people know little about them.
The main gallery is covered with hundreds of these names and images. Around it, three smaller halls take on three stories every American thinks they know. One looks at Pocahontas and how her life became a legend. Another covers the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Trail of Tears. The third is about the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 and why it lives on in memory.
The tone is often witty, which makes the hard history land harder.
Next, families with young children should head to the imagiNATIONS Activity Center on Level 3.
