A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations looks at the hundreds of treaties the federal government signed with Native nations, and at how those agreements have been kept, bent and broken. It is scheduled to stay on view until January 2028.
The exhibit shows that treaties were agreements between sovereign nations, much like those the U.S. made with foreign countries, and that many are still law today. It follows the story from the colonial era through the forced removals of the 1800s to modern court fights over land, fishing and water rights.
The centerpiece is an original treaty lent by the National Archives. The documents are fragile, so the museum swaps them out from time to time; check which one is on display when you visit.
Next, walk on to the exhibition Americans.
