A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
West of the Conservatory are the Botanic Garden's outdoor gardens, which opened in 2006 and were long known as the National Garden. They are free and open every day.
The Rose Garden grows roses chosen to thrive in the Washington climate without heavy spraying. Nearby, the First Ladies Water Garden honors the nation's first ladies with a quiet square pool framed by paving, a fountain and a pattern of tile.
There is also a Regional Garden of plants native to the Mid-Atlantic, a pollinator garden that attracts bees and butterflies, and a small amphitheater whose steps are marble from the Capitol's East Front, removed when it was extended.
Next, cross Independence Avenue to Bartholdi Park and its fountain.
