Hall of Human Origins - Meet Your Ancestors
A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
The David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins, on the first floor, opened on March 17, 2010, the museum's 100th anniversary year. Its 15,000 square feet trace about six million years of human evolution through more than 285 fossils and casts.
The faces you meet along the way are life-size reconstructions of early human species, built by paleoartist John Gurche from fossil skulls. They let you look straight into the eyes of relatives like Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis.
An interactive station takes your photo and morphs it into an early human face, and a timeline wall shows how climate swings shaped our ancestors. It is one of the most popular halls for school groups.
Next, take the stairs or elevator to the second floor to see the Hope Diamond.
