Hall of Fossils - Deep Time - The Nation's T. rex
A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
The David H. Koch Hall of Fossils - Deep Time, on the first floor, reopened in June 2019 after a five-year renovation. It covers about 31,000 square feet and shows more than 700 fossils, telling the story of life on Earth across roughly 3.7 billion years.
The star is the Nation's T. rex, posed in the act of tearing into a Triceratops. It was found in 1988 by Kathy Wankel, a rancher who spotted bones on federal land in Montana. The skeleton belongs to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which lent it to the Smithsonian for 50 years.
Don't miss the FossiLab, where you can watch museum staff and volunteers clean and prepare real fossils through the windows. The hall also links ancient climate change to the changes happening today.
Next, head to the Hall of Human Origins nearby.
