A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.

On the first floor, East Wing, at the entrance to the exhibition FOOD: Transforming the American Table, is the actual kitchen from Julia Child's home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She cooked here for decades, and three of her television series were filmed in it.

When she moved to California in 2001, she gave the whole room to the museum: cabinets, appliances, cookbooks, more than 1,200 objects. Curators took it apart and rebuilt it here exactly as she left it.

Look at the counters. Her husband, Paul, had them built a couple of inches higher than standard because Julia stood about six foot two. On the pegboard walls he traced the outline of each pot and pan so it would always go back in the right spot.

Next, head up to the second floor for the Star-Spangled Banner.
