Culture and Community Galleries - Chuck Berry's Cadillac and More
A stop on Washington DC National Mall Walking Tour, a free self-guided tour.
The upper floors are where the museum gets loud. On Level 4, the Culture Galleries trace Black creativity in music, theater, film and the visual arts. Musical Crossroads is the crowd favorite: look for Chuck Berry's cherry-red 1973 Cadillac Eldorado and a replica of the Mothership, the 1,200-pound spaceship that Parliament-Funkadelic landed on stage in the 1970s.
One floor down, on Level 3, the Community Galleries cover the military, religion and sports. Sports: Leveling the Playing Field is anchored by a statue of Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their gloved fists on the medal stand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
The Level 4 windows frame some of the best views on the Mall, out to the Washington Monument and beyond. When you are finished, head back out to the stop and continue along the Mall.
