Fred Rogers Statue - A Seat on the Bench Beside HimStop on Mister Rogers, a free self-guided tour.End the day the way he might have wanted: sitting down with someone. In James H. Rogers Park, named for his father, a local businessman, a life-size bronze of Fred Rogers sits on a park bench in his cardigan and sneakers.Sculptor Jon Hair spent about six months on the piece, and it was unveiled in December 2016. Unlike the towering memorial on Pittsburgh's North Shore, this one is built for company. His arm rests along the back of the bench, leaving an open seat beside him, and visitors of every age take it.It is a fitting finish. The day began with a monument that looks out over a big city's river and ends with a quiet bench in the small town where he grew up. Take your time here, and maybe tell whoever is sitting next to you something you appreciate about them.Getting here: Walk about one block to James H. Rogers Park at the corner of Main and Jefferson Streets.Did you know?: The statue weighs about 300 pounds, a fraction of the 7,000-pound memorial you saw on the North Shore.Photo op: Sit on the open half of the bench so the statue's arm rests behind your shoulders. For kids: Sit next to him and tell him about your day, or about a feeling you had today.Hours and cost: Free, outdoors and open at all hours.Stops on this tourTribute to Children - Mister Rogers on the RiverfrontChildren's Museum of Pittsburgh - Meet the PuppetsHeinz History Center - The Largest Neighborhood CollectionWQED Studios - Where the Neighborhood Was TapedPittsburgh Theological Seminary - The Minister of the NeighborhoodFred Rogers Exhibit at Saint Vincent College - His Life in LatrobeLatrobe Presbyterian Church - A Hometown BeginningLatrobe Art Center - A Sister's Gift to the TownFred Rogers Statue - A Seat on the Bench Beside Him
