Punta Sur Sculpture Park - Art on the Cliffs
A stop on Isla Mujeres: Town to Punta Sur, a free self-guided tour.
At the island's southern tip, the road ends at a park of big, bright metal sculptures set out along the cliffs. The sculpture park opened in December 2001, when artists from Mexico and around the world came to the island and donated works for this spot. Among them were Mexican greats such as Jose Luis Cuevas, Manuel Felguerez and Helen Escobedo, alongside sculptors from Egypt, Iceland, Cuba, the Netherlands and the United States.
Most of the pieces are abstract, some up to three meters tall, and the artists placed them to use the slope of the rock and frame views of the sea. After years of neglect the park was restored, and in late 2025 four new sculptures on Maya themes, including a figure of the goddess Ixchel, brought the total to 21.
The paths are exposed rock with little shade, so bring water and a hat. Part of the area has an entry fee; check current hours. Walk slowly and let each sculpture frame its own slice of sea.
Getting here: Continue south on the main road past the beach clubs to its end at Punta Sur. Park by the entrance and follow the path toward the cliffs.
Did you know?: The project was led by the Mexican sculptor known simply as Sebastian, famous for his monumental geometric works.
Photo op: Line up one of the colorful abstract sculptures against the open sea, with the cliffs dropping away behind it.
