Pier 39 and the Sea LionsStop on San Francisco Waterfront Tour, a free self-guided tour.Pier 39 is a festival marketplace built on an old cargo pier featuring over 100 shops and restaurants, street performers, and spectacular bay views. But the star attraction is the colony of California sea lions that took up residence on the western floating docks (K-Dock) shortly after the 1989 earthquake. These charismatic marine mammals hauled out on the docks, and despite initial concern from boat owners, they were allowed to stay. Today, up to 900 sea lions can be present during winter, though numbers vary seasonally as they migrate. Watching these playful, noisy creatures bark, fight for space, and dive into the water is completely free and endlessly entertaining. The Sea Lion Center operated by the Aquarium of the Bay provides information about these fascinating animals. Beyond the sea lions, Pier 39 offers the Aquarium of the Bay with walk-through tunnels showcasing bay marine life, a historic carousel, the SkyStar observation wheel rising 150 feet for panoramic views, and numerous dining options from casual seafood to sit-down restaurants. Street performers create a carnival atmosphere throughout the day. The pier provides excellent views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the bay. While commercial, Pier 39 successfully combines entertainment, shopping, and natural wonders in one accessible location.Stops on this tourGolden Gate BridgeFort Point National Historic SiteCrissy Field and the PresidioPalace of Fine ArtsSan Francisco Maritime National Historical ParkGhirardelli SquareFisherman's Wharf Historic DistrictPier 39 and the Sea LionsAlcatraz Island Views and Ferry PierEmbarcadero Waterfront PromenadeAT&T Park (Oracle Park) and China BasinFerry Building MarketplaceRincon Park and Cupid's SpanExploratorium at Pier 15Bay Bridge and Waterfront Views
