Cupecoy Beach - Dramatic Cliffs and Caves

Stop on St Maarten Island Paradise Tour, a free self-guided tour.

Continue west to discover Cupecoy Beach, one of St Maarten's most distinctive coastal areas. Unlike most Caribbean beaches, Cupecoy is backed by dramatic limestone cliffs and sandstone formations that have been carved by wind and waves into caves, arches, and interesting shapes. These natural formations provide pockets of shade throughout the day, eliminating the need for umbrellas. The beach itself is divided into several small coves separated by rocky outcroppings, giving each section a private, intimate feel. The white sand contrasts beautifully with the golden and reddish tones of the cliff faces, creating spectacular photo opportunities. The western end of the beach is clothing-optional, a common practice on the French side nearby. The water here is typically calm and excellent for swimming, with a gradual slope that makes entry easy. At low tide, you can explore the caves and tide pools, discovering small marine creatures and interesting rock formations. The cliffs protect the beach from wind, making it comfortable even on breezy days. There are no commercial facilities directly on the beach, preserving its natural character, though there are bars and restaurants a short walk away. The lack of development means fewer crowds, and you might have entire coves to yourself. Cupecoy is particularly beautiful in late afternoon when the setting sun illuminates the cliff faces in warm golden light.
