Halfway to Hana - Banana Bread Checkpoint

A stop on Maui: The Road to Hana, a free self-guided tour.

Despite the name, nobody measures this stand with a ruler. Halfway to Hana is a roadside snack stand that has been serving drivers since 1982, and it sits close enough to the midpoint that the name stuck.

The house specialty is banana bread, baked fresh each day with local bananas. Banana bread is something of a contest on this road, with several stands around Keanae each claiming the best loaf, so feel free to sample more than one. Here you can also get shave ice, ice cream, smoothies and simple sandwiches, and there is a small area to sit and eat.

This is a good moment to look at the clock. If it is already early afternoon, consider which stops ahead matter most to you, since you will want daylight for the drive back. The road beyond here gets narrower and more dramatic, with waterfalls dropping right beside the pavement.

Grab a loaf for later, stretch, and get ready for the wildest stretch of curves.

Getting here: Return from Keanae to the highway and continue about half a mile. The stand is on the right near mile marker 17.

Did you know?: The stand has an ATM, a rare thing on the Road to Hana, where many fruit stands take cash only.

Photo op: Snap your loaf of banana bread with the stand's hand-painted sign behind it, the classic road-trip souvenir shot.

Nearby: Snacks, banana bread, shave ice, drinks, light meals, an ATM and an eating area. Check the stand's website for hours.
