A stop on Yosemite Valley, a free self-guided tour.

Walk out onto Sentinel Bridge and face upstream. Framed by trees, Half Dome rises above the Merced River, and on a calm day its reflection floats on the water below. This is one of the most photographed views in the park.

Half Dome's sheer face formed as the granite broke away along vertical cracks, with glaciers helping to carry the loose rock off. An Ahwahneechee legend tells it differently: a woman named Tis-se-yak was turned to stone here, and the dark streaks on the face are her tears.

North of the bridge spreads Cook's Meadow, with an easy, flat one-mile loop on paths and boardwalks. From the middle you can see Yosemite Falls, Half Dome and Glacier Point all at once. Look for mule deer grazing at dawn and dusk.

Enjoy wildlife from a distance. The park asks you to stay at least 50 yards away from bears and other animals, never feed them, and store all food properly, even in your car.

Getting here: Drive a short way east on Southside Drive and turn left onto Sentinel Drive. Park in the small lot by the bridge if there is space, or at the Yosemite Village day-use parking just north; from here on, walking and the free shuttle are easiest.

Did you know?: Yosemite's black bears are often brown, cinnamon or even blond. Grizzlies, the bear on California's flag, have been gone from the state for about a century.

Photo op: Stand on the bridge facing upstream (east) and frame Half Dome above the river. Early morning and evening bring the calmest reflections.

Nearby: Restrooms, water, groceries and food are in Yosemite Village, a short walk north.
