Kaumahina State Wayside - Restrooms With a View

A stop on Maui: The Road to Hana, a free self-guided tour.

Every road trip needs a reliable pit stop, and Kaumahina State Wayside is the Road to Hana's classic. This small state park covers just under 8 acres of forest on a hillside above the sea, with a paved parking lot, restrooms and covered picnic tables.

The reward is the view. Walk to the edge of the lawn and look east along the rugged northeast coast. On a clear day you can see the flat, green Keanae Peninsula sticking out into the ocean below, your next stop.

The park is shaded by tall trees and tropical plants, and short loop paths let you stretch your legs. Kids can run around here while the driver takes a break from the curves.

Use this stop to reset. Check the weather ahead, top up your water, and remind everyone in the car of the rules for the narrow road ahead: slow down, wave thanks, and pull over when a local driver comes up behind you.

Getting here: Drive about 1.5 miles past the Garden of Eden. The wayside is on the right side of the highway near mile marker 12.

Did you know?: Kaumahina sits about 28 miles from Kahului and 22 miles from Hana, so you have already covered more than half the distance from the airport town.

Photo op: From the lookout at the edge of the lawn, frame the Keanae Peninsula below with the curving coastline behind it.

Nearby: Public restrooms, covered picnic tables and a paved parking lot. No food or water for sale.
