Black Mailbox - Send a Letter to the StarsStop on Area 51, a free self-guided tour.Rancher Steve Medlin and his wife Glenda settled on a cattle ranch in Tikaboo Valley in 1973 and put up a plain mailbox by the road. That was that, until 1989, when Bob Lazar went on television claiming he had seen alien craft being tested nearby. Lazar has never produced evidence for his claims, but UFO watchers came anyway, and the mailbox became a pilgrimage site. The box has been replaced several times after theft and vandalism, and it has been white at times even though everyone still calls it the Black Mailbox. Visitors leave stickers, notes and small offerings for whoever might be listening. Check what you find when you arrive.Stay on the road shoulder and respect the working ranch beside it. Then do the best thing this stop offers: look up. Out here, far from any city glow, the night sky is astonishingly dark.Getting here: Keep going west on State Route 375 for about five miles past the Groom Lake Road turnoff. The mailbox stands beside the highway at Mail Box Road, near mile marker 29.5.Trivia: Which rancher's mailbox became the famous Black Mailbox?Nearby: None. Pull off carefully on the shoulder and pack out any trash. Food and lodging wait in Rachel.Stops on this tourAtomic Testing Museum - Where the Secrets BeginAlamo - The Last Town Before the TrailAlien Research Center - A Silver Sentinel at the GateGroom Lake Road - The Line You Do Not CrossBlack Mailbox - Send a Letter to the StarsLittle A'Le'Inn - Aliens Welcome, Burgers TooTonopah Mining Park - Silver, Then SecretsMizpah Hotel - The Lady in Red Waits UpstairsGoldfield - Nevada's Biggest City, OnceRhyolite - A Ghost Town in the SpotlightArea 51 Alien Center - Last Call for SouvenirsIndian Springs - Remote Wars, Quiet Town
