Footbridge and Athletics Hill - Two Hilltops

A stop on Foothill College Campus Walk, a free self-guided tour.

You have just crossed from one hilltop to another. Peter Walker's master plan for the campus was an acropolis scheme: academics on one hill, athletics on the other, joined by a pedestrian bridge. Walking between class and the gym means crossing open air with views in every direction.

Around you are the Main Gym, building 2600, which holds up to 1,500 people on its retractable bleachers; the smaller gym and fitness center in 2500; and the locker rooms and Kinesiology and Athletics office in 2700 and 2800. The college's Olympic-size pool sits in the middle of the complex. It has been closed for repairs, and the college plans to rebuild it as a 25-by-50-meter competition pool, so check the website for its status.

Down the hill beside Lot 1, the stadium has synthetic turf, an eight-lane all-weather track and bleachers for 2,000 fans. Foothill's teams, the Owls, compete in the Coast Conference of California community college athletics.

Getting here: From the Campus Center plaza, walk east across the footbridge to the pool and gym complex.

Did you know?: The 1961 plan was praised for separating people from cars: pedestrians stay on the hilltops while drives and parking wrap around the slopes below.

Photo op: Stop midway on the footbridge and look back west to frame the Campus Center rooflines against the main hilltop.
