Twin Falls - A Farm's Gift to the Road
A stop on Maui: The Road to Hana, a free self-guided tour.
Twin Falls is the first waterfall stop on the Road to Hana, and it sits on private land. Wailele Farm, a working family farm, opens its trail to the public, so you can walk to the falls legally without trespassing. Please stick to the marked paths, since the valley beyond belongs to the farm and its neighbors.
An easy trail leads from the farm stand along historic irrigation ditches to pools fed by Hoolawa Stream. Those ditches are part of the East Maui Irrigation system, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s to carry rainwater from Haleakala's wet slopes to the sugar fields of central Maui. You will see channels like these all along the drive.
The farm grows bananas, coconuts, mangoes and lilikoi, and the stand at the trailhead sells smoothies and banana bread made from them.
If it has been raining hard, skip the stream crossings. The farm closes the trail during floods, and water here can rise in minutes.
Getting here: Drive east on Hana Highway about 9 miles. Where Route 36 becomes Route 360 the mile markers restart at zero; Twin Falls is just past mile marker 2, with a signed parking lot on the right.
Did you know?: The farm around Twin Falls gets roughly 80 to 100 inches of rain a year, which is why the valley is so green.
Photo op: At the lower falls, stand back on the rocks and frame the twin ribbons of water dropping into the pool.
Nearby: Farm stand with drinks, smoothies and snacks at the trailhead and a parking lot run by the farm. Check the farm's website for hours and closures.
