Rotunda of the Sea - Thrones You Can Sit On
A stop on Puerto Vallarta: Malecon and Old Town, a free self-guided tour.
Go ahead and sit down. The strange bronze creatures arranged here are chairs, part of The Rotunda of the Sea by the Guadalajara artist Alejandro Colunga, installed in 1996. There are 16 pieces, eight large and eight small, surreal seats and figures inspired by the sea, and they were made to be sat on and photographed.
A short walk further south, at the corner of Calle Corona, look for In Search of Reason by Sergio Bustamante, from 2000. Two slim figures climb a tall bronze ladder toward the sky while a third figure waits at its foot. Bustamante, known for his dreamlike faces, meant this one to be interactive too.
These two pieces show the Malecon's playful streak: art here is meant to be touched, sat on and talked about. Notice how many people stop to pose, and join them.
Getting here: Continue south on the Malecon about 250 meters, past Calle Abasolo, to the group of bronze chairs near Calle Aldama.
Did you know?: The ladder in In Search of Reason is about 6.8 meters tall.
Photo op: Take a seat on the largest throne and have a friend frame you with the sea and the curve of the bay behind.
