Gymnasium and Aquatics - Hall of Fame Row

A stop on College of San Mateo Campus Walk, a free self-guided tour.

In front of you is the Gymnasium, Building 8, one of Warnecke's original 1963 buildings. Count the three tall glass bays between its concrete columns: that rhythm repeats all over the older campus. Inside are the main gym, home court of the women's basketball team, plus a small gym, a dance studio and a strength room.

At the gym's north entrance is the CSM Athletics Hall of Fame Plaza, dedicated in 2011 with names set on granite and bronze pillars. Look for John Madden and Bill Walsh, who both played football here before their Super Bowl careers as coaches, and Archie Williams, who won the 400 meters at the 1936 Olympics.

Next door, the Health and Wellness Building, Building 5, opened in 2010. It holds the nursing, dental assisting and cosmetology programs, Health Services, the San Mateo Athletic Club and the Aquatics Center, with an Olympic-size 50-meter pool and a separate warm-up pool. There's also a small cafe, Le Bulldog.

Getting here: Walk back up Athletic Loop Road and follow the path past the tennis courts to the gym's north side, facing the Library.

Did you know?: The old campus pools were removed to build the Aquatics Center, and the swim and water polo teams went about 22 months without a home pool until it opened in 2010.
