Battery Davis - The 16-Inch Gun EmplacementsStop on Fort Funston Historic & Scenic Tour, a free self-guided tour.Battery Davis represents one of the most impressive coastal defense installations on the West Coast. Constructed between 1936 and 1939, this massive fortification housed two 16-inch Mark 2 Navy guns, each weighing 143 tons. These enormous weapons were transported by railroad from Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1937 and represented the prototype design for air-raid protection that was adopted for nearly all US 16-inch batteries during World War II. The battery was named after Richmond Pearson Davis, a U.S. Army brigadier general. Visitors can walk through the concrete structure and explore the gun rooms, ammunition magazines, and passageways. The thick concrete walls and steel doors showcase the engineering prowess of the era. Information panels explain how these guns could fire projectiles weighing over a ton at enemy ships up to 25 miles away. The eerie concrete tunnels and chambers provide a tangible connection to the soldiers who once manned these defenses, ready to protect San Francisco Bay from naval attack.Stops on this tourMain Parking Area and Hang Gliding Viewing DeckBattery Davis - The 16-Inch Gun EmplacementsNike Missile Site SF-59 Launch AreaSunset Trail - Coastal Bluff WalkBank Swallow Nesting CliffsSand Ladder Beach AccessHorse Trail and Equestrian AreaHistoric Battery Howe SiteSand Dune Ecosystem PreserveChip Trail and Northern ViewpointsFort Funston Native Plant NurseryCoastal Trail Connection - California Coastal TrailOff-Leash Dog Recreation AreaGeological Formations and White Ash LayerLake Merced Connection and John Muir Drive Trailhead
