LinkedIn Headquarters - Mountain View

Stop on Silicon Valley Tech Heritage Tour, a free self-guided tour.

LinkedIn, founded in 2003 by Reid Hoffman and team members from PayPal, became the world's largest professional networking platform. The company's headquarters in Mountain View represents the social media wave that transformed Silicon Valley in the 2000s. LinkedIn demonstrated that social networking could serve professional rather than just personal purposes. With over 900 million users worldwide, LinkedIn changed how professionals connect, how companies recruit, and how careers are managed. Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in 2016, one of the largest tech acquisitions. The LinkedIn campus, while not open for public tours, represents the evolution of Silicon Valley companies that build platforms connecting people rather than creating physical products. LinkedIn's success relied on network effects - the platform becomes more valuable as more people join - a characteristic shared with other successful Silicon Valley social platforms. The company's emphasis on using data science to improve connections and its eventual pivot to include learning resources (LinkedIn Learning) show how Silicon Valley companies continuously expand their offerings. LinkedIn's story illustrates the PayPal Mafia phenomenon, where successful entrepreneurs from one company (PayPal) went on to found or lead numerous other successful ventures, creating networks of experience and capital that accelerated Silicon Valley's growth.
