Herman Wells Library and Arboretum
Stop on Indiana University, a free self-guided tour.
Next we will head west down 10th street to the main library and the ArboretumHerman B Wells Library, often just called Wells Library, is the heart of academic life at Indiana University Bloomington. Named after Herman B Wells, the university’s beloved president and chancellor, it's more than a repository of books—it's a vibrant hub of student activity.
Opened in 1969, Wells Library is a massive structure comprising two main towers: the West Tower, which is largely focused on social sciences and humanities, and the East Tower, which delves into the world of technology and science. One of the library's most distinctive features is its Brutalist architecture, characterized by massive concrete facades and unique geometric shapes.
Over the years, Wells Library has grown and adapted to meet the needs of a modern student body. It offers a myriad of study spaces, ranging from quiet individual nooks to collaborative group rooms. The Information Commons is a tech-savvy haven equipped with public computers, high-speed internet, and multimedia equipment, perfect for any digital project or presentation.
One of the legendary stories about Wells Library involves the 'Stair of Ambiguity.' The winding staircase connects the first and second floors in such a complex manner that it can be disorienting for newcomers. This labyrinthine design is said to represent the challenging but ultimately rewarding pursuit of knowledge.
Don't miss the Herman B Wells statue outside the library. Students often dress the statue in seasonal attire: scarves in winter, sunglasses in summer. It's a campus tradition to rub the nose of the statue for good luck during exams!
Next door to Wells Library, you'll find the School of Education, a leading institution for teacher training and educational research. The building features state-of-the-art classrooms, extensive teaching resources, and a vibrant atmosphere aimed at shaping the educators of tomorrow.
Herman B Wells Library and its neighboring buildings form a vibrant ecosystem of knowledge, culture, and community. It's a place where history meets modernity, tradition melds with innovation, and students craft their academic and social journeys. Whether you’re diving into research, catching a show, or simply enjoying the beautiful campus, this area offers something for everyone.
