Indiana University Sample GatesStop on Indiana University, a free self-guided tour.jdfrens, CC BY-SA 2.0The Sample Gates stand as a symbolic entryway to Indiana University's Bloomington campus. These limestone arches are a fairly recent addition. Constructed in 1987, the gates serve as a formal entrance to the historic Old Crescent of the campus. They were made possible thanks to a donation by Edson Sample, a 1920 graduate, and his wife, who wished to honor their son's memory, who had passed away.Limestone, the primary material used, was sourced from nearby quarries in Bedford, Indiana. The design itself, featuring Gothic Revival elements, mirrors the architectural style seen throughout the campus. The gates are frequently adorned with commemorative plaques and inscriptions that highlight significant moments and figures in the university’s history.Take a quick look behind you at downtown Bloomington. The street in front of you is Kirkwood Avenue, a bustling street filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Turn around and the woods you see are called Dunn's Woods, offering a serene natural setting with walking paths.Take a picture if you like and lets walk through the woods....Stops on this tourSample GatesDunn's Woods and Surrounding BuildingsShowwater Fountain, IU Auditorium, and Art MuseumJacobs School of Music and Southeast CampusStudent Recreation CenterHerman Wells LibraryKelly School of Business and Northeast CampusAssembly Hall & Memorial StadiumAssembly HallMemorial StadiumIndiana Memorial Union
