Tesla Headquarters and Showrooms

Stop on Silicon Valley Tech Heritage Tour, a free self-guided tour.

Tesla, founded in 2003 and led by Elon Musk since 2004, revolutionized the automotive industry by proving electric vehicles could be desirable, high-performance products. Tesla's headquarters moved to Austin, Texas in 2021, but the Palo Alto engineering headquarters at Deer Creek Road remains important, and multiple Tesla stores and service centers operate throughout Silicon Valley. Tesla showrooms welcome visitors to explore their vehicles, learn about electric vehicle technology, and schedule test drives (requirements apply). The company's impact extends beyond cars - Tesla's battery technology, solar products, and charging network infrastructure advance sustainable transportation. Tesla exemplifies Silicon Valley's application of tech sector thinking to traditional industries, treating cars as software-defined platforms that improve through over-the-air updates. The company's vertical integration strategy, direct sales model, and willingness to challenge industry norms reflect Silicon Valley's disruptive philosophy. Tesla's Fremont factory, the only major auto manufacturing plant in California, occupies the former NUMMI facility where GM and Toyota once produced cars. Tesla's success inspired the entire automotive industry to accelerate electric vehicle development, demonstrating how Silicon Valley companies can transform established sectors through technology and innovative business models.
