Dutch Windmill and Queen Wilhelmina Tulip GardenStop on Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, a free self-guided tour.At the far western end of Golden Gate Park stand two historic Dutch-style windmills that once served a remarkable practical purpose: pumping the freshwater needed to irrigate the entire 1,017-acre park from the underlying aquifer. The North Dutch Windmill, built in 1902, is the larger of the two - its sails span 114 feet and it could pump 30,000 gallons of water per hour in a good breeze. The adjacent Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, maintained in the Dutch horticultural tradition, explodes with color in spring when thousands of tulips bloom beneath the windmill's sails. The Murphy Windmill to the south, built in 1905, has been restored to working condition. Together these windmills tell the engineering story behind the park's lush landscape - and make for one of the most photogenic spots in San Francisco.Stops on this tourMcLaren Lodge and Sharon MeadowConservatory of FlowersRhododendron DellMusic Concourse and Spreckels Temple of Musicde Young MuseumCalifornia Academy of SciencesJapanese Tea GardenSan Francisco Botanical GardenStow Lake and Strawberry HillSpreckels Lake and Model Yacht ClubPolo Fields and Speedway MeadowBuffalo Paddock - American Bison HerdRainbow Falls and Chain of LakesDutch Windmill and Queen Wilhelmina Tulip GardenOcean Beach - Western Gateway
