Schenley Plaza - From Parking Lot to Front LawnStop on University of Pittsburgh Campus Walk, a free self-guided tour.End your walk on Pitt's favorite front lawn. This land began as a deep ravine called St. Pierre Hollow, filled in around 1913 and 1914. A plaza was built here in 1921, but by the 1930s it had become a parking lot for students and Forbes Field fans, and it stayed that way for decades. From 2004 to 2006 the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy turned it back into a park. Today its 4.5 acres include a one-acre lawn with free Wi-Fi, gardens, food kiosks, plenty of chairs and a Victorian-style carousel. On a nice day, half the campus seems to be here.At the far end is the Mary Schenley Memorial Fountain, also called A Song to Nature, dedicated in 1918, showing the god Pan listening to a woman playing a lyre. Across Forbes Avenue, the Cathedral of Learning where you started is just a few steps away.Did you know?: The fountain's sculptor, Victor David Brenner, also designed the Lincoln penny.Photo op: Stand near the fountain and frame the Cathedral of Learning rising above the lawn.Accessibility: Paths are flat and paved, and there's lots of seating, from benches to movable chairs.Stops on this tourCathedral of Learning - A 42-Story ClassroomStephen Foster Memorial - Pittsburgh's SongwriterHeinz Memorial Chapel - The Ketchup King's TributeSoldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall - A Temple for VeteransAllen Hall - Mellon's Lab and Marie CuriePetersen Events Center - Home of the Oakland ZooSalk Hall - Where the Polio Vaccine Was BornScaife Hall - Pittsburgh, Transplant CapitalLitchfield Towers - Freshman CentralWilliam Pitt Union - A Hotel for Presidents and BallplayersHillman Library - Pitt's Big Study HallForbes Field Wall - Maz's Home RunSchenley Plaza - From Parking Lot to Front Lawn
