A stop on Central Park Highlights Walk, a free self-guided tour.
End your walk at the park's own castle, perched on Vista Rock, the second-highest natural point in Central Park. Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould designed it in the late 1860s as a folly, a building meant mainly to look romantic and give visitors a place to take in the view. Its name means beautiful view in Italian.
Since 1919 the castle has also been home to Central Park's official weather station, so when a forecaster gives the temperature in Central Park, the readings come from instruments here. The castle was restored in the 1980s and again in a major renovation that reopened it in 2019.
Climb to the terraces to look over Turtle Pond, the Delacorte Theater and the Great Lawn. From up here you can see how Olmsted and Vaux's design works, one carefully framed view after another. Admission is free; check the hours. To leave the park, head west to the American Museum of Natural History or east to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Getting here: Walk back south past the Delacorte Theater and climb the steps up Vista Rock to the castle.
Did you know?: The castle was built with only its eastern half finished; a matching western structure in the original design was never built.
Photo op: From the shore of Turtle Pond, frame the castle on top of its rock with its reflection in the water below.
