Forbes Field Wall - Maz's Home RunStop on University of Pittsburgh Campus Walk, a free self-guided tour. You're standing in what used to be the outfield. Forbes Field opened on June 30, 1909, and was home to the Pittsburgh Pirates until it closed in 1970. Pitt football played here too, from 1909 to 1924. The ballpark was torn down in 1971, and Pitt built Posvar Hall on the site. This stretch of red brick wall, with its old distance markers, is part of the left-center field wall that still stands where it always did. A line of bricks leads from Posvar Hall across the street toward it.The wall's big moment came on October 13, 1960. In Game 7 of the World Series against the New York Yankees, Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a home run over the left field wall to win it all - still the only walk-off home run ever to end a World Series Game 7.Inside Posvar Hall, when it's open, home plate is set under glass in the floor near its original spot.Did you know?: The section of wall that Mazeroski's home run actually flew over was moved to PNC Park in 2009.Photo op: Stand beside the wall and frame the old distance markers painted on the brick.Accessibility: Roberto Clemente Drive is a short, level street with paved sidewalks. Posvar Hall has elevators and is open during class hours.Stops on this tourCathedral of Learning - A 42-Story ClassroomStephen Foster Memorial - Pittsburgh's SongwriterHeinz Memorial Chapel - The Ketchup King's TributeSoldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall - A Temple for VeteransAllen Hall - Mellon's Lab and Marie CuriePetersen Events Center - Home of the Oakland ZooSalk Hall - Where the Polio Vaccine Was BornScaife Hall - Pittsburgh, Transplant CapitalLitchfield Towers - Freshman CentralWilliam Pitt Union - A Hotel for Presidents and BallplayersHillman Library - Pitt's Big Study HallForbes Field Wall - Maz's Home RunSchenley Plaza - From Parking Lot to Front Lawn
