Hillman Library - Pitt's Big Study HallStop on University of Pittsburgh Campus Walk, a free self-guided tour.Ask Pitt students where they spend finals week, and many will point here. Hillman Library opened on January 8, 1968, and is the main library of a university system holding roughly 7 million volumes, about 1.5 million of them in this building. It's named for John H. Hillman Jr., a coal and industrial businessman whose family and foundation gave millions toward its construction. The modernist block may look plain next to the Cathedral, but inside, the library has been undergoing a long, floor-by-floor renovation to create brighter study spaces for today's students.Visitors are welcome during the day and evening; late at night, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., you need a Pitt ID to get in. During much of the semester the library stays open around the clock on weeknights, which tells you a lot about exam season here. Check the library's website for current hours before you go in.Did you know?: Hillman Library has seating for more than 1,500 students at once.Photo op: From the edge of Schenley Plaza, frame the library's long modernist front across Forbes Avenue.Accessibility: The Forbes Avenue sidewalk is level and paved. Check the library website for accessible entrances and current visitor hours.Stops on this tourCathedral of Learning - A 42-Story ClassroomStephen Foster Memorial - Pittsburgh's SongwriterHeinz Memorial Chapel - The Ketchup King's TributeSoldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall - A Temple for VeteransAllen Hall - Mellon's Lab and Marie CuriePetersen Events Center - Home of the Oakland ZooSalk Hall - Where the Polio Vaccine Was BornScaife Hall - Pittsburgh, Transplant CapitalLitchfield Towers - Freshman CentralWilliam Pitt Union - A Hotel for Presidents and BallplayersHillman Library - Pitt's Big Study HallForbes Field Wall - Maz's Home RunSchenley Plaza - From Parking Lot to Front Lawn
