The CMU FenceStop on Carnegie Mellon University, a free self-guided tour.Perhaps no tradition at Carnegie Mellon is more beloved - or more fiercely contested - than The Fence. Standing near Skibo Gymnasium, this simple wooden post-and-rail structure has been painted and repainted continuously since the 1990s, and the rules governing it are entirely student-enforced. Any student organization that wants to claim the fence must paint it between midnight and 6 AM while maintaining continuous physical presence on the fence from start to finish. In the morning, whatever message or artwork adorns the fence belongs to that group - until another group claims it the next night. The fence has been painted thousands of times and carries layers of paint many inches thick. It is a perfect symbol of CMU's culture: competitive, creative, collaborative, and governed by traditions that every generation of students inherits and upholds.Stops on this tourThe Cut - Heart of CMU CampusHammerschlag Hall - Original Carnegie TechMargaret Morrison Carnegie HallCollege of Fine Arts BuildingBaker Hall - Humanities and Social SciencesGates-Hillman Center - School of Computer ScienceNewell-Simon Hall - Robotics InstituteRandy Pausch Memorial FootbridgePurnell Center for the ArtsCohon University CenterThe CMU FenceHunt LibraryWean Hall - Mathematics and ComputingTepper School of BusinessWarner Hall - University AdministrationSoftware Engineering InstituteGesling Stadium and Campus Athletics
