Welcome Center - Where Free Niagara Began
A stop on Niagara Falls State Park Walk, a free self-guided tour.
You're standing at the front door of the oldest continuously operating state park in the United States. Look at the lawns and shade trees around you and try to picture this ground in the 1870s: mills, factories, hotels and fences crowded the riverbank, and many of the best views cost money to see.
Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted was appalled, and he helped lead a campaign that became known as Free Niagara. In 1883 Governor Grover Cleveland signed the bill, New York bought out the private owners and cleared away about 150 buildings, and on July 15, 1885 the Niagara Reservation opened, free to everyone. Olmsted and his Central Park partner Calvert Vaux shaped it to feel like nature rather than a fairground, with winding paths that keep the falls hidden until the last moment.
The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center behind you opened in 2023. Pick up a map here, then follow the paths toward the roar.
Getting here: Start at the Welcome Center near the park end of Old Falls Street; there is paid parking in the lots next to it.
Did you know?: On March 29, 1848, an ice jam upstream nearly stopped the Niagara River, and for as long as 40 hours only a trickle went over the falls.
Photo op: Stand on the plaza in front of the Welcome Center and frame the tree-lined paths leading off toward the mist rising over the river.
Nearby: Restrooms, information and ticket desks, and concessions are in the Welcome Center.
