Parque de las Palapas - Where Locals Gather
A stop on Cancun: Downtown and the Hotel Zone, a free self-guided tour.
You are standing in the living room of downtown Cancun. Hotel guests rarely make it here, but on a warm evening this square fills with families, kids on the play areas, music on the stage and the smell of street snacks from the food stalls.
The park sits in the middle of Supermanzana 22. When planners laid out the city around 1970, they divided it into supermanzanas, or superblocks: big blocks of homes wrapped around a shared open space. This was the heart of the first one, a short walk from City Hall on Avenida Tulum. The thatched palapa shelters that gave the park its name came down long ago, and the square was remodeled again and reopened in 2024.
This is the Cancun that the Hotel Zone was built to support, the city where hotel workers, cooks and drivers raise their families. Take a slow lap, look for the food stands, and notice how few tourists are around you.
Getting here: This is the starting point, in downtown Cancun between Avenida Tulum and Avenida Yaxchilan.
Did you know?: Cancun had only three residents in January 1970, caretakers of a coconut plantation. The 2020 census counted almost 890,000 people in the city.
Photo op: Stand at the edge of the plaza at dusk and frame the lit-up stage with families and food stalls in front of it.
